[3] Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a 2021 animated film based on the book series of the same name. [4] It released on Disney+ on December 3rd, 2021. The film was originally intended to be a TV series, but Jeff Kinney confirmed that it would be an animated film[5]. In November 2018, Kinney confirmed to have written two episodes, later stating in an interview with ComicsBeat that it would arrive "within the next couple of years". [6]
In May 2020, in an interview with the Boston Globe, Kinney revealed the origins of the project, saying "This project started off years ago with the idea that we'd create a holiday special for Fox. But the entertainment world has completely transformed since then, and a streaming platform seems ideal for Diary of a Wimpy Kid thus an upcoming animated Disney+ original series based on the book series of the same name." [7]
Synopsis
Greg Heffley is a scrawny but ambitious kid with an active imagination and big plans to be rich and famous – he just has to survive middle school first.
Plot
The movie starts off with Greg's classic quote ("First of all, let me get something straight; this is a journal. Not a diary.") as it shows a montage of Greg and the "diary". The movie starts in the traditional "2D B&W" style with Greg explaining how he'll be "rich and famous one day", as it shows people on a train reading Greg's autobiography. Greg then starts talking about his gullible best friend Rowley.
The 2D B&W style abruptly ends as the scene changes to a 3D neighborhood, starting off with the Big Wheel incident, when Rowley (on the Big Wheel) accidentally swerved into the sidewalk trying to catch a football that Greg threw. Greg starts explaining about how he's only friends with Rowley because there's nobody else to befriend with the same interests as him other than Fregley.
Greg goes home for dinner, where his mom, Susan questions him regarding his dirty "back to school clothes" and after questions him about if he was playing Rumble Trike. Greg lies, saying he didn't play Rumble Trike, and Susan believes him. Susan finishes cleaning his shirt, when Manny suddenly throws a meatball at him and says "I'm onwy thwee!". Susan starts questioning about how Rowley feels about going to middle school for the first time, and then starts talking about how Rowley is lucky to have Greg with him through middle school.
Susan tells Rodrick to give Greg some tips on going to middle school, but he is too busy listening to music on his headphones. Rodrick then explains three things that would be crucial to Greg in middle school, the advice being the following:
- "Watch where you sit on the first day of school, because your teacher might make that your permanent seat."
- "Next, don't use the bathrooms on the second floor, no matter HOW bad you have to go. There aren't any doors on those stalls."
- "And finally.. whatever you do, DON'T get the Cheese Touch."
Greg gets scared at the thought of the Cheese Touch, when Susan comes and sarcastically thanks Rodrick for the advice and then tells Greg to forget whatever Rodrick said, and especially forget the cheese.
Greg gets curious, and eggs on Rodrick to explain more about the Cheese Touch. Rodrick goes on to explain:
" | It all started in my first year of middle school.. The only way to get rid of the Cheese Touch was to give it to someone else. Then one day, a kid named Abe Hall moved to California; he took the Cheese Touch with him. But the cheese remained.. and to this day, it sits on the blacktop, waiting to strike again! | " |
Susan goes up to Rodrick and tells Rodrick to not scare Greg. Susan also tells Greg not to tell Rowley about the Cheese as it would scare him half to death. Rodrick, being oblivious again, asks who "Rowley" was and Susan replies saying that he's Greg's best friend. Rodrick then finally tells Greg to not be seen with Rowley, as that would make him immensely unpopular.
Greg then heads over to Rowley's house after, and notices all the childish items decorating Rowley's room. Greg worries that he'll be weighed down in Middle School, distracting him from the fact Rowley was winning. Rowley starts imitating a chicken, which makes Greg snap and he tells Rowley to cut it out. Greg tells Rowley things about middle school, other than the Cheese Touch. After that, he and Rowley do their secret handshake.
Later, the two get to Westmore Middle School for the first time. Once they get into the school, they are immediately swarmed with kids bumping into each other, pushing others into lockers, and getting thrown on the ground. As Greg and Rowley try to get through the madness, they finally reach their lockers. It turns out that their schedules don't match, with the only thing matching being Lunch.
Greg goes on to explain how Middle School feels VERY different; the biggest change being about "..who's popular and who's not." Greg goes on to explain that the fastest runner was the most popular in Elementary (the most popular in 5th grade being Ronnie McCoy), and how it's changed in Middle School being that popularity is now based off of looks on social media and real life (while it shows George Deveney having girls shower him). Greg also talks about the easiest way to be unpopular; The Cheese.
Greg and Rowley enter the lunch room, where they see that all the seats are reserved for popular kids (or kids in clubs). They eventually find a spot.. on the stage. Lunch abruptly ends while Rowley and Greg are talking about going to the back of the school to meet up again, and Greg tells Rowley to "think good thoughts". While Rowley is absorbing Greg's advice, he embarrasses him in front of the whole lunch room by asking Greg to "play" with him after school.
Rowley goes to the back of the school (as planned), and some bullies taunt his childish act during Lunch. Greg goes on to explain that they were safe for the next few weeks, but after that, Rowley started to revert to his old self (around Halloween). Greg went, dressed up as a ninja to maintain a low profile, as he is too old for trick-or-treating. To Greg's chagrin, Rowley ironically wears a toy LED sword with a unicorn water float. Greg tries to leave quick, but Susan sees him and tells Greg to take Manny with him. Rowley ignores Greg's advice of staying low profile, as he rushes to the first house, with everyone seeing him. When they open the door, the guy comes out and gives Manny five candies but only one for Greg and Rowley, saying "aren't you too old to be trick-or-treating?". After hitting a few houses, a guy gave Manny a king-sized candy bar, which made Greg angry as he bets it'll take Manny FOREVER to finish that candy bar but Manny unexpectedly, gives it to Greg. This gives Greg an idea, while they hide in the bushes, Manny knocks on the front door's and get's all the candy for them since people think he's cute.
At the end of the night when Manny was asleep, Greg suggests to Rowley that they should go to Whirley Street through Snake Road to get extra candy but Rowley told him about what his mom said but after Greg says that they're not little kids anymore, he goes along with him. Greg and Rowley walked into Snake Road for a bit and then Greg saw a truck and him and Rowley ducked behind a tree. When they started walking again, the teenagers spotted them and drove over to them. After some talking, Pete Hosey said it would be ashame if their candy got wet, and took out a fire extinguisher and opened fire at them. Rowley blocked most of the water with his shield which made the teenagers angry so they went back in their truck while Greg and Rowley were running away. They ended up chasing after Greg and Rowley, in their truck and throwing water balloons at them. After some chasing, Greg rolled a log at them which threw them off and their truck fell into a river. So Greg and Rowley escaped and Carter said they were gonna pay for this.

Reception
This film overall got a mixed reception from fans. Some complements were the old characters coming back and the focus returning to middle school, but there were still more criticisms such as Rodrick and Frank's lack of screen time, the uncanny CG visuals, the voice-acting quality, making Greg too likable (which takes away a lot from Greg's character development), making Rowley come off as unlikable, many major scenes being cut out (such as Safety Patrol incident) and the fact that it was only 58 minutes (which is way too short for a feature film). Still, this movie is considered to be WAY better than The Long Haul movie.
Changes from the Book and 2010 Live-Action Film
- Bryce Anderson seems be replaced by George Deveney
- The film only goes to November instead of going through the whole school year like in both the book and live-action film.
- Rodrick has a small minor role in the film compared to the book and the live action film.
- Rowley is left-handed in this movie, while in the book and the live-action films, he's right-handed.
- Angie, Patty Farell, and Collin are absent, though, Patty and Collin are both mentioned by Rowley.
- The Halloween scene:
- Greg dresses up as a Ninja instead of a pirate.
- Rowley, while still a knight (with safety measures) also wears a toddler rubber ring as part of his costume as well.
- Manny joins Greg and Rowley during Halloween. Frank remains outside on the roof the whole time.
- Greg actually gets grounded for going to Snake Road.
- Chirag Gupta is featured as Rowley's new friend instead of Collin Lee.
- The following scenes were completely cut from the film:
- The entire snow scene where Greg and Rowley attempt to build the biggest snowman. A brief scene from this sequence was used for test purposes when the film was first announced.
- The Wizard of Oz play, which is only mentioned in the movie.
- The scene where Rodrick tricks Greg into thinking it's the first day of school by waking him up at 3 a.m.
- The wrestling scene.
- The Safety Patrol are entirely cut out. This scene was only mentioned as well. Mrs. Irvine was removed, too.
- Greg doesn't attempt to be class clown in this adaptation, or be popular in this case, either instead he tries to be popular enough to get a seat.
- The scene where Rodrick gets in trouble for Manny, at preschool, showing one of the pages in Rodrick's magazine which had a picture of a woman in a Bikini lying across the hood of the car at show-and-tell.
- The scene's where Greg runs for Student government.
- Independent Study.
- The Crossland High haunted House.
- Greg and Rowley making thier own haunted house down in Rowley's basement.
- Pete Hosey is no longer the leader of the gain instead the new leader is Carter.
- Instead of Chirag telling Greg about The Cheese, it's Rodrick.
Book/Live-Action Film Parallels
- Greg and Rowley playing with the Big Wheel is adapted from the first book. This occurs at the beginning of the film instead of the Christmas arc of the book.
- Greg being forced to sit in front of the class is adapted from a similar scene in Rodrick Rules.
- Rowley asking Greg to "play" instead of saying "hang out" is adapted from the first book.
- Greg spending the night at Fregley's is adapted from the first book.
- Fregley eating Greg's candy bar and getting hyper is adapted from the live-action film, where he eats Greg's jelly beans instead
- Rowley creating the Zoo-Wee-Mama strip adapts the same scene from the book and live-action film. Like the book, Greg originally created the strip before being done with it. But Rowley decides to build off a scrapped comic strip, unlike the book where Greg hands the idea down to him instead.
- Greg and Rowley being chased by the teenagers is adapted from the first book. In the film, they are chased while on Snake Road, where in the book they travel to Snake Road to lose the teenagers. Also, Manny is present during this scene, unlike the book where he was absent.

Goofs/Errors
